The American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) is a national, nonprofit trade association that represents beauty and wellness schools across the U.S. It’s essentially the industry’s hub for education, advocacy, and networking.
Overview
- Founded: 1924
- Membership: Includes cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, nail technology, and massage therapy schools—both private and public.
- Purpose: To advance the interests of beauty and wellness education, support schools in regulatory compliance, and strengthen the connection between students, educators, and the professional beauty industry.
What AACS Does
- Advocacy
- Works with state and federal lawmakers to influence policies affecting cosmetology education (such as licensing requirements and financial aid eligibility).
- Acts as a voice for beauty schools when regulations could affect curriculum hours or accreditation.
- Education & Professional Development
- Hosts annual conferences, leadership summits, and educator workshops.
- Offers training for school owners, directors, and instructors on topics like admissions, student retention, and teaching techniques.
- Student Recruitment & Support
- Runs public awareness campaigns about career opportunities in beauty and wellness.
- Offers scholarships for students entering or continuing cosmetology programs.
- Industry Networking
- Connects schools with major beauty brands, suppliers, and salons/spas.
- Facilitates partnerships between educators and product manufacturers.
Relationship to Accreditation
- AACS itself is not an accrediting agency.
- Many of its member schools are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) or National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS).
- AACS provides resources to help schools stay compliant with accrediting standards.
Why It’s Important
AACS helps protect the career pathway for thousands of students by making sure cosmetology programs remain accessible, recognized, and connected to the job market. Without their advocacy, changes in laws or funding could drastically impact beauty school operations.
